SOIL is one such B-School which practices what it preaches and there is not an iota of difference between its words and deeds. I realised this on the day when our learned professor Arjya Chakraborty, Program Chair and Professor of HR & OB, Head of Social Innovation, announced a dedicated day for the Social Innovation Program (SIP).

SOIL acts as a platform that aims at bringing about a transformation in the lives of the people. It not only prepares its students theoretically, but also gives a practical exposure to understand the pain points of the society through its Social Innovation Program – a part of the curriculum which allows all its students to experience and work with various NGOs. This exposure not only serves the society but also allows the students to discover their leadership and innovative skills through a noble cause.

She announced a day where she invited around twenty plus NGOs to our campus where we hosted them and understood their work. They all gave us a brief introduction about what they do and they invited us to join hands with them. In today’s world, business is geared towards the development of society. Many organizations are participating in social projects in greater numbers than ever before. It’s not just a part of their CSR activity, but it is also about giving back to the society, it is about how can we improve and bring a difference in each other’s life.

It’s astonishing that all the NGOs our faculty invited were absolutely different as far as the domain of their work was concerned. There were NGOs of almost all types which are working to uplift the society / planet / country day and night selflessly. It’s hard to put in words what they are actually doing not just on the grass root but beneath it which can only be seen when you dig in. Any responsible citizen’s heart will melt just by knowing what sort of work they are doing.

SOIL handpicked these NGOs to give us flavour of what actually it means to work for society and almost all domains are covered such as senior citizens, water conservation, child labour, women empowerment, child development, mental health, old age care, orphanage, cancer patients help.

Now comes the execution aspect where each student was assigned to an NGO to work together. Working for a non-profit organisation extends one’s horizon. It creates an impact on how one has to go about achieving one’s goals and making decisions. Also, in an NGO, we get to work with people of various cultures, social strata and celebrate diversity, gaining knowledge and experiential learning. It helps us adjust to a variety of cultural demands and behavioural standards, which in turn helps all of us students to learn the art of dealing with any kind of difficult situations. SOIL not only prepares us to be better managers for tomorrow, but it also makes us ready to be better future leaders, filled with compassion and love.
