“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles and someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.”

The Giraffe Heroes India Initative – Supported by School of Inspired Leadership

I’m saying to be a hero is means you step across the line and are willing to make a sacrifice, so heroes always are making a sacrifice. Heroes always take a risk. Heroes are always deviant. Heroes are always doing something that most people don’t and we want to change. This is recognized by the Giraffe Heros’ Project. The GHIP is a non-profit organization which honors the risk-takers who are largely unknown, people who have the courage to stick their necks out for the common good in US and around the world. It’s a big recognition with no cash awards being commended a Giraffe Hero, given to people for their noble acts towards society. GHP also creates awareness amongst people for their civil rights and how one can take a stand – bravely, deftly & without compromising their integrity for the right issues which are of benefit to ordinary citizens.

The key purpose to commend the risk takers for doing common good & thus motivate other people also to stick their necks out for the common good and give them tools to succeed in their endeavors. It proves that the hard work and efforts put in for the betterment of the society does not go unrecognized also making better society, a healthy system & vibrant India.

The nonprofit ‘Giraffe Heroes Project’ took shape in the head and heart of Ann Medlock living in Manhattan-USA. Ann Medlock would find unknown heroes, commend them as ‘Giraffes’ get their stories told on radio, television and in print. These stories would feed people’s souls, reform their attitudes and get them move on to engage with public problems that mattered to them. Ann noticed people have been telling the stories of heroes for thousands of years as a way to communicate their culture’s values and these needed to be showcased. A subsidiary designed to manage international work of GHP was launched in 2009, The GH International which is directed by John Graham husband of Ann Medlock.

There are many issues every country faces these day and they need to be rectified. The Giraffe Hero’s recognition empowers people to work for common causes such as environment, poverty, disease, health, corruption, human rights, women rights and conflicts. Today John Graham provides a lot services on behalf of the project. He helps in support for partners from local media, govt. agencies and NGOs. He also does a lot of social activities such as conducting workshops, public speeches on leadership and skill development.

Today GHIP is spread across various countries helping the mankind. GHIP has spread its arms in publishing full array of books, articles, graphics, website designs and training-materials developed by the Giraffe Heroes Project. This year Giraffe Heroes had fourteen nominations from across the country. Nominations such as ‘Laxmi’ – The acid attack survivor; ‘Sampat Pal’ – Founder of the Gulab Gang; ‘Narendar Paul’ – CORD Visionary; ‘Shobhit Chauhan’ – Founder of Ek Sangharsh; and many more such people who have dedicated their lives towards the society.

The School of Inspired Leadership (a leading business school in Gurgaon) is proud to be the knowledge partner for the first jury meet of the Giraffe Heroes India Project. Dr. Vijay Saluja – Director of GHIP was present at the meet to grace the occasion. Many other jury members including Anil Sachdev – Founder of SOIL – a management institute were present to evaluate students, who had presented presentations on behalf of the nominees. The students had conducted an ‘Appreciative Enquiry’ with the nominees and presented the same to the jury.

Overall it was a great experience. SOIL’s initiative to join hands with GHIP and serving mankind, by recognizing the risk takers with an aim of leaving a legacy behind.

SOIL is one of the leading full-time one year MBA colleges in Delhi, India and it builds competence, nurture character and generate enthusiasm in students that builds inspired leaders.
