My Experience Leading a SOIL Club

An MBA is truly incomplete without clubs and societies. Like every B-school, SOIL has a number of clubs which gives additional responsibilities to each of the club heads and their members. It allows students to pursue their interests apart from the daily academic activities and this forms an integral part of learning and growing.

My Experience Leading a SOIL Club

Throughout the 2021-2022, the Illuminators batch has carried out successful events and activities, solely managed by the members of each club. You can imagine the exposure that a student gets once he or she organizes such events. This in turn prepares the students to take on challenging roles and responsibilities in the corporate world once he steps outside the college.

To get the insights of what happened in the clubs, let’s hear it from the Club Heads:

    Creative and Design Club

Saurabhkumar Singh, Creative and Design Club Head

Club Slogan: Nurturing the Idea of Business into Art

Signature Event: Creative Ad Making Competition

My experience: “As the head of the club, I have gained incredibly valuable experience. The creative club was working in close collaboration with other clubs and as time passed, I learned the quality of how to be an effective collaborator, right from evaluating situations to getting things done creatively. In simple words, we learnt the art of co-creation.

When we organized the Creative Ad Making Competition, I learnt that having a clear purpose is very important while designing. Being open-minded is equally important because it allows us to see things from a different perspective in a new and innovative way.”

What I learned: “My diverse learning experiences have shaped my personality and aspirations, and my decision to focus on my strengths while addressing my weaknesses has laid the groundwork for me to become a good leader.”

    Finance Club

Mudit Krishna Vasal, Finance Club Head

    Club Slogan: Finance 360°

Signature Events: Banking Week, Simulation Game, Finance Conclave 2022, Budget 2022

My experience: “Serving as President of the SOIL Finance Club provided me with invaluable professional development opportunities. There were some difficulties in forming a team and getting things to work smoothly at first. We were a group of students for whom this field was the least appealing. However, the Finance Club was successful in convincing individuals of the relevance of this profession in the end. “You may leave finance, but finance will not leave you. I always remind my friends, club members, and co-workers because money counts everywhere.”

The club began its adventure with the Banking Week event: a one-of-a-kind industry week that provided 150+ students with first-hand exposure to many aspects of banking. The club then achieved another milestone and established new benchmarks when it completed a month-long “Stock Market” Simulation Game. When the Christmas season arrived, the Finance Club launched an award-winning film, The Big Shot, to raise awareness of the global financial crisis of 2008 and its causes. The event was a huge success, and the club received a lot of excellent feedback. In keeping with its efforts, the club held a Finance Conclave in the new year and hosted the budget release in February 2022.

What I learned: When undertaking a 12-month long MBA program, there is always ups and downs. If you wait a week, the event you’re trying to organize might never happen. To overcome these challenges, I learned how to effectively manage my time and deal with ambiguity, as well as how to allocate the right work to the right person.

    Entrepreneurial Club

    Adity Mohanty, Entrepreneurial Club Head

Club Slogan: Turn your Imagination to Reality

    Signature Events: UPitch 2021

My experience: “We are all mere travellers, each of us trying to find our own path, a path to a fate which is certain for no one. In this journey, the people we meet, the friendships we make, and the bonds we forge, provide us with the light to see ahead and keep walking on the trail that we choose.”

When I was appointed the position of the Club Head of the E-Cell, I knew that the experience was going to be something rewarding and memorable, just like the event UPitch which gave a platform to all students to show their entrepreneurial skills. But what happened in the year of my tenure went above and beyond all expectations. With the year being mostly virtual, and placement seasons and classes being vital, engagement was something that was, understandably, hard to obtain initially. However, this challenge was something that showed how strong team spirit can be, and how powerful a sincere effort can be. While managing numerous events over the year, I was able to learn priceless skills like Time management, Logistics management and building an engaging community.

What I learned: Entrepreneurship is a path that can be both daunting and dangerous to the unaware. However, those who know the proper skills and have the determination to continue along this path will certainly reach the future they desire. I am eternally grateful for the support of the community and hope for its continuous success of this club ahead.

    Marketing Club

Aakash Nayyar & Karanjeet Singh, Marketing Club Head

Club Slogan: To make your dreams happen

Signature Events: Lakshya – The Marketing Magazine, The Happiest Hour, The Sales Strategia Competition

Our experience: We still remember the day, we got selected as co-heads. There was a feeling of nervousness running in our veins as to how we would be running this club which was known as one of the most crucial academic clubs of SOIL but thanks to Prof. ANB’s guidance and our seniors who supported us in this journey.

We started by arranging small group study events for our members and fellow students to understand the basic concepts of the marketing mix. As club members, we came out with an idea to launch our flagship publication Lakshya – The Marketing Magazine which included important events related to marketing in the real world.

We also organized The Happiest Hour, during which we invited our fellow alums and industry leaders to share their marketing experiences. Competitions are the best way for us to learn about our strengths and weaknesses & sales is the first step towards becoming an innovative Marketeer. We organized The Sales Strategia Competition. Students were expected to research the companies and products they intended to join and develop an appealing Go to Market Strategy while also defining a well-crafted Sales Pitch for the same.

What we learned: From prestigious speaker events and panel discussions to arranging and attending business competitions, members attended club events as a fun way to learn the ins and outs of the industry. Here we learned the art of correlating various concepts taught to us and apply them for practical usage.

    Sports Club

    Shivam Srivastava, Sports Club Head

Club Slogan: Together everyone achieves more

Signature Events: 9th SOIL Premier League, Table Tennis Competition, Badminton Competition

My experience: Games and sports are just as essential as studies. They are an essential component of the research as they provide a much-needed break from the monotony of college academic life. I would say that B-School life would be dull and dreary without sports.

Throughout this journey, we conducted the 9th SOIL Premier League, Table tennis, and Badminton competitions and more for our current batch. People did exhibit a genuine interest in these sports and gave it their all. They all played every match as if it were their last. Obviously, one wins where the other loses, but it was the participation that counted. It was such a great experience for me and the entire sports club members.

What I learned: We learned a lot in the process of upbringing these events successfully. This wouldn’t have been possible without the club members’ immense support that stayed with us. The time I spent at SOIL pursuing my PGPM, was not only a pivotal period in my profession, but it also shaped my personality, personal goals, and attitude. It taught me that the value we contribute to goods and services through our work is measured not by the profits we make, but by the difference we make in people’s lives all over the world.

    Cultural Club (Aafreen)

    Apeksha Tandon, Club Head

Club Slogan: Explore your Hidden Talent with Us!

Events: All annual celebrations including Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s Birthday, Independence Day, Dusshera, Diwali, Lohri and Pongal, Parents Day, Republic Day, Hol, MAGI and more!

My experience: For me, leading the Cultural Club at SOIL has been a wonderful experience. The Cultural Club at SOIL stimulates students by giving them a platform to showcase what they’ve got, and by encouraging them in discovering their hidden talents. By celebrating these cultural events here at SOIL, our club aims at helping students to keep in touch with rich cultural values, customs, and traditions in the country. I recall the zeal with which we organized our first cultural event, Bal Gangadhar Tilak Ji’s Birthday, on July 23rd, and how well it turned out. Moving forward, there were a variety of other events to consider, including national events and festivals such as Independence Day, Republic Day, Holi, Diwali, Dusshera, and other special events at SOIL such as Parents Day and MAGI. All of these require extensive planning and time management, as well as audience engagement to ensure that the events were interactive.

What I learned: As a Club Head, you must also master the art of persuasion, motivation, and appreciation in order to elicit maximum engagement from the batch and align them all in the same direction. It is often stated “A Nation’s Culture Resides in the Heart and Soul of its People“. Finally, I want to conclude by saying that throughout my journey with Club Head, I learned how to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and also polished my skills of getting work done by people in an effective manner.
