PGPM vs PGDM: Which One Should You opt for and When

Singleness of purpose is one of the chief essentials for success in life, no matter what may be one’s aim.

    —John D. Rockefeller

Planning on pursuing a career in management? With a host of options available with different nomenclatures, the young aspirant is bound to be evaluating their options. With the CAT results being declared, the admission season is on and there is a big decision of where to apply. However, the choice of a management institute is dependent on various factors based on one’s profile, aspirations and requirements. Next is to negotiate the maze of the nomenclatures of various MBA courses available. However, there is definite logic and reasoning that can drive one’s choice and narrow them.

To help students to come at an informed decision which is best for them, we will examine the key differences and recommendations between two popular MBA formats i.e., PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) and PGPM (post Graduate Programme in Management).

The key difference between PGDM and PGPM

    • Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is a two-year MBA meant for freshers who are looking for a career in management. At the successful completion of the programme, a diploma is awarded to the candidate.
    • Post Graduate Program in Management (PGPM) is a one-year MBA that is aimed at and suitable for the experienced aspirant. It is, in sum and essence similar to the PGDM, and the successful completion entitles the candidate to receive a certificate.

    PGDM

The PGDM programme, spread over two years, is good for candidates who are straight out of college (freshers) or with experience up to 2 years and who wish to have a management career.

The programme gives the student an immersive and extensive exposure to management concepts along with internships and exposure to experiential immersions that will help develop their personal and professional goals. The idea is to develop a well-rounded personality, ready to take on the rigours of the corporate/ business world.

    Admissions

Usually, intake to this programme is dependent on a good academic background. In addition, an aspirant’s application is to be supported by GMAT/ CAT/ XAT/ MAT/ SNAP/ NMAT Scores. The shortlisted applicant then has to go through a rigorous evaluation process before being considered for admission.

    Pedagogy

In a typical PGDM programme, the first year is dedicated to knowledge on the foundation of management. The idea is to help students gain integrated learning and exposure across all functional areas and increase their awareness. In addition, the student may be able to develop their specialisation preferences. Typically, the PGDM covers the following basic core functional courses in the first year: Marketing, Finance, Operations, Finance, Analytics and Human Resources, etc.

In the second year also known as the specialisation year, students choose electives to gain in-depth knowledge on their preferred subjects. The popular areas of specialisation are Marketing, Finance, Analytics & Human Resources

    Advantages

The PGDM programme gives flexibility to the student to work through and develop their preferences as the course progresses. It has been seen that younger learners are less biased by their existing knowledge and are inherently more flexible and exploratory.

Exposure to internships gives an additional dimension for the student as they gain meaningful industry exposure. Many a time, they manage to draw job offers on the basis of their performance in their internships. Besides, internships provide an opportunity to work in the industry under the mentorship of skilled professionals.

    Placements

There are a host of employment opportunities in the industry after completing a PGDM course. Starting as a management professional in the corporate world in any business scenario offers multiple opportunities.

    PGPM

A PGPM is a one-year MBA programme that mandatorily looks at a work experience of two to five years. Since PGPM looks to derive benefit and build on the work experience of the candidate, meaningful experience is the key. The idea is to enable the candidate to realise their ambition and leapfrog their career.

Doing an MBA, after one has been working for some time, it is a big decision for some. The quandary of opportunity cost as one has to forego stable earnings and the fact that the course is extensive, and requiring dedication, makes it a choice that every aspirant has to make with some thought.

    Cost & ROI

The fee for a one year MBA varies from institute to institute but the ROI is quite high. At SOIL, every year during Placement season, we see an ROI of 200%+ as a hike in the salary received post MBA for our students..

    Admissions

At SOIL, the intake to the PGPM programme is generally based on the candidates overall profile, and not just their exam scores or academic record. There is a rigorous evaluation process designed by the institute to ensure the best fit for each student to the course. Entrance scores like CAT/ GMAT etc. are optional and may add to the applicant’s profile.

    Pedagogy

The PGPM programme is normally spread over three terms. The initial term looks to provide the student a refresher on the basics of business studies like in the PGDM programme. The rest of the term/s are devoted to specialisation tracks and advanced learning, as well as integrated learning. There is also special emphasis on Experiential learning at SOIL, Mentorship programs, Leadership sessions and Individual Development. Once again, the popular specialisations are in the areas of Finance, Analytics, Marketing and Human Resources.

    Advantages

The student after this programme acquires conceptual skills along with the synergy of collective experience and colleagues with a diverse background. This gives an added dimension to learning through case discussions, capstone projects, group evaluations, live projects, social work and more. These help the student to gain meaningful insights in their personal and professional growth. Suited for working professionals who are ambitious or individuals who want to acquire entrepreneurial skills, this programme provides just the right platform.

    Placements

PGPM is gaining in popularity with companies hiring professionals who have completed this course since it is focused and industry specific. The fact that students already have relevant work experience also helps during placements. Corporates look to hire professionals for middle / higher management roles depending on their profiles with high CTCs and exciting roles.

SOIL as a Cutting Edge Business School

Both the PGDM and PGPM programs at SOIL look to arm students with management skills, a broader vision and the right business knowledge. Both the one-year MBA and the two-year programs look to creating a well-rounded personality and give each of our students a platform to excel.

So, if you want your aspiration to meet your inspiration, SOIL Institute of Management is the place to come to. There are options available to cater to the young aspirants wanting a management career as well as for aspirants with experience who look to accelerate their career.

Across functional areas, this provides a best in line learning experience for the aspirant. SOIL Institute of Management has devised pedagogy to ensure quality management education in India. In this endeavour, they have the backing and support of a host of academicians, entrepreneurs and business leaders from within India and across the globe.

SOIL has decided to give this area specific thrust and launch an exclusive management program in Analytics & Digital. Exposure to modern analytical tools such as Python, R, Hadoop etc., and their business applications is covered in this programme besides applications of AI, IoT, Data Sciences and other emerging digital technologies.

SOIL’s 2-year PGDM – Business Design is a bold and radical step in changing management education. The program aims at creating business leaders who excel in problem solving and creativity. The focus is on redefining processes to streamline businesses.

Graduates of the program will be ideally placed to be the change leaders in the near future.

    Why SOIL?

At SOIL the focus is on holistic development of each of our students. Not only do they grow professionally, our students are self aware, have fully developed EQ and the ability to calmly and intelligently deal with any kind of challenges that may arise.

SOIL MBA courses also sharpen the skills that you need in the corporate world to effectively communicate and help shape the future of the world. Giving back to society through community outreach and a humane approach will be the mantra of a SOIL Leader.

Unlike most B-schools, SOIL stresses on Mental and Physical well-being as well. Yoga is a part of the curriculum and hence, necessary. By being peaceful on the inside and active on the outside, one can easily achieve even more than what has initially been planned.

The pandemic required us all to go within instead of the seeking happiness elsewhere. Once the mind is calm, everything going on externally falls right into place. Asanas and meditation taught to students at SOIL enabled its students to navigate the trying times of the stressful lockdowns. Students feel that besides education and career enhancement, with SOIL, they have grown and evolved as an individual.
