  • Alumni Mentoring: Creating a Learning Journal

On the basis of my interaction with the current HARMONIZERS batch I feel that this batch is full of life. They have a huge positive energy and zeal to excel in their life. In this period of economic crisis when most people are worried about their future, I see this batch totally engaged with the SOIL curriculum. They are not only busy, learning various aspects of management but are also utilizing them in designing useful knowledge and energy sharing interesting elements like videos, newsletters, poetry. If they continue to move with the same pace, I feel each one of them will exhibit following traits:

    H: High level thought process
    A: Attitude to excel
    R: Rise on every occasion
    M: Mindful about people around
O: Omitting all the negative thoughts
    N: Never say die attitude
    I: Innovative thinking
    Z: Zeal to deliver
    E: Energize people around
    R: Respectful in every aspect
S: Surrender their life to the service of Nation

What is a Learning Journal and why should we maintain one?

A daily Learning Journal is basically a true script of events of our life. It describes each and every event which has a profound impact on us.

But why do we require it?

A person’s character is defined by his or her actions and actions originate from events. If we are sincerely able to gauge each and every event of our life which could define our character, then it will help us in connecting with ourselves. And once a person gets connected with their self then he or she will start realizing their true strengths and weaknesses. Once realized, strengths can be further built upon and weaknesses can be controlled.

This process will then redefine our character and will lead us to the path of self exploration. Once we enter this journey of self exploration we will reach a point which will clearly define our “Vision of life”.

As the sector will be aligned with their vision so they will always have a positive energy within self. This positive energy will further generate a passion which will drive them to acquire new sector based skills and this will increase their employability.

This entire process can be achieved only when we follow the concept of Journal writing in which we capture all such events in form of a lead document.

A page from my Daily Journal – An Impactful Event of my Life

I am going to share one such event from my journal which helped me to redefine my life.

It was the month of March, 2011 when I was about to complete my MBA degree at SOIL. We were 77 in our batch. Placement season was almost in its final phase and only 32 students from our batch had got placed. It was a matter of serious concern as we had only a month left for completion of our MBA program and very few companies were left before the end of placements. I was very concerned about my friends who were not placed and wanted to help them somehow.

I sat in my room and made a list of the remaining 45 students. Then I wrote a story on each of them based on my interactions with them till March and jotted down their strengths and weaknesses. I went to the placement office and took a copy of the list of companies about to visit SOIL, along with resumes of the students eligible for interviews in each.

Then I convinced all the 32 students from my batch to help me in the process of making the remaining 45 interview ready and successful. We named this project “MISSION 77”. Soon we got into action. Few took the task of redesigning the resumes, few took up the task of giving subject based knowledge, few focussed on sharing sector based knowledge and I took up the task of conducting mock interviews. Every day I scheduled at least 10 – 12 interview sessions from evening 6 till morning 4. Our hard work started giving results and each and every student attending the interview cracked it at one go. Soon the placement figures shot up and we got each of them placed by the end of our program.

It was the convocation ceremony when faculty members and my batch mates informed me that I was chosen as the INSPIRED LEADER of our batch. That was a very proud moment for me to receive the award as I got it for achieving a MISSION which I dreamt for my batch mates.

This event redefined me and took my life to the next level. After receiving this honor, I decided that I need to keep its dignity intact and it energized me to create LAKSHYA.
