Can a Non- Tech Background Student Learn Business Analytics? Absolutely, here’s how.

Imagine! Walking into a job interview showcasing your skills with an impressive Tableau dashboard and walking out with an offer from prestigious companies.

Does it sound too good to be true? Think again.

Do you really believe that you need to be a math genius? Absolutely not.

You don’t need to be a math wizard to succeed in analyst roles, but you do need the right program, mentorship, and the curiosity to follow the path with confidence.

Many non-tech-background students, having successfully completed their Business Analytics program, are in high-impact roles across top companies. You could be the next. How? Know more.

Busting the Myths About Business Analytics

We all know that business analytics uses data to drive informed decisions and boost efficiency. Yet myths about its complexity have been quite exaggerated for a while now:

    • Myth 1: You need to be a math genius to understand it.
Nothing can be further from the truth; although a background in math does help in studies, advanced mathematics is not a prerequisite. With companies building intuitive dashboards, basic training can help non-tech people to draw insights.
    • Myth 2: Only the tech-educated can use analytics.
The tools now come with the option of drag-and-drop options in the dashboard; they are designed for curious, not necessarily technical, people.
    • Myth 3: AI will replace human analysts.
The role of AI is focused on processing data and finding patterns. Human analysts also have skills like critical thinking, context, and aspects of strategy that AI still lacks.
    • Myth 4: Analytics is a solitary job of number crunching
The job of business analyst is to interact with various departments such as marketing, product, and finance to drive actionable insights and produce results, and he doesn’t work a solitary job.

3 -Step Roadmap for Business Analytics Career

Tools to kickstart your analytics Journey

Every data professional starts somewhere, and no, it’s not to create a wall of code. There are simple tools that turn the datasets into actionable insights. Transformation from a confident student to a confidant analyst starts with mastering these tools, such as

    • Microsoft Excel: The introduction for beginners is helpful as they learn pivot tables and data manipulation.
    • Tableau / Power BI: Used in creating compelling visualizations for presenting research findings. Power BI is used for building interactive reports.
    • Google Analytics (GA4): Use analytics to measure different metrics for a variety of reasons, like conversion, bounce rate, etc.
    • SQL (Structured Query Language): It helps you extract, filter, and analyze large models like MySQL and Big Query.

    Enroll in a Structured Program

Enrolling in a structured program reduces the wandering of the students. YouTube videos may feel like enough at first, but after a while you are stuck in an endless loop, taking a lesson from every channel and trying to grab every free video on the topic, which leads you to nowhere in the quest with half-learned skills and under confidence for interviews.

That’s the reason SOIL’s PGPM program with Business Analytics is present to guide you in a structured manner so that they not only teach you the basic tools but also provide clarity and confidence for the future analyst career path. Dr. Bianka Ray Choudhary teaches Business Analytics and data mining in SOIL’s PGPM program. She has extensive experience in teaching, with over 15+ years of experience in business analytics.

Craft a Portfolio that steals the spotlight

Working on real-world projects help students not only gain hands-on experience but also shows ‘Proof of potential.’ Portfolios are a way to showcase the company and the recruiters that you have worked on projects, and you will be able to transition well.

Craft a Portfolio that steals the spotlight

The PGPM candidates had an opportunity to engage with senior leaders from Schneider Electric. The session helped participants develop industry experience and academic learning. SOIL’s PGPM is intentionally structured around hands-on learning and preparing students with mentorship by domain experts to help them be industry-ready and give them a competitive edge.

From Grad Student to Analytics Star

Joy Alphan, a graduate student of the PGPM with Business Analytics program, transformed his career and got placed as a business analyst at Happiest Minds. The mentorship and industry exposure provided by SOIL helped him be ready for the industry as a business analyst. Here in the video, he explains how SOIL’s guidance and structured approach helped him learn business analytics in the 1-year PGPM program.

    Launch your data hero journey

You don’t need to be a coding wizard or statistics major to be good at analytics. The only requirement to start your journey is curiosity regarding the analytics field. SOIL empowers you with clarity and interest in solving real-world problems.

If you are looking to switch careers or upskill to move up in the hierarchy, SOIL’s PGPM programme with Business Analytics becomes a launchpad for your dreams, whether you are from a tech background or not.
