World Boss Day is celebrated all over the world on October 16th in honour of all hard-working bosses. Its primary aim is to bring to light how a great leader brings out the very best in a team for the long term goal fulfilment of any corporation.

Also known colloquially as Bosses Day, National Boss Day started in 1958 and is considered to be a secular holiday. It was officially registered with the US Chamber of Commerce as National Boss’ Day by Patricia Bays Haroski who was a secretary in Deerfield, for Start Farm Insurance Company, Illinois. Patricia chose the day of 16th October as it happened to be her father’s birthday, who was also her employer. A few years later the Governor of Illinois, Otto Kerner, officially recognised Boss’ day and in 1979, Hallmark introduced cards to commemorate the day.

Bosses Day is the day where one treasures the hardworking leaders directing the work environment. Teammates and employees across the globe give thanks to and convey their gratitude to them on this day. Being the leaders of the organisation, they naturally bear the burden of responsibility and take care of supervising and counselling their employees. Although bosses are liable for a business or organisation and taking it to newer heights, the number of responsibilities they take on to perform their duties efficiently are countless.

While some are answerable to others, in one way or another, everyone has a boss to report to. If the boss happens to own their enterprise, they would still be liable to answer to the taxation authorities, customers, investors or traders. To keep a business afloat and the ship sailing smoothly, a good boss knows best which representative to put forth and to proceed with the confidence that the business would grow.

This day is a way in which we can all remind ourselves of the efforts our leaders and guidance counsellors put in to create a healthy work environment that makes the functioning of a business seem effortless. A great boss also brings the best out of their employees and inspires them by working harder than them. Some of the best bosses lead by example rather than directing them. With leadership being the capacity to translate vision into reality, being an effective leader is one of the most important skills one can equip themselves with.

The 2 Year Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) program at SOIL nurtures precisely such skills and insights in its students who will ultimately become the world’s future bosses. With classes such as Inspired Leadership being led by the founder of SOIL himself, Anil Sachdev, students of the PGDM program are imparted with lessons from his highly valuable experience. Every week of PGDM at SOIL presents a unique opportunity to transform oneself and evolve into one’s best version owing to the special focus at leadership. The institute organises various events that instil leadership capabilities such as Leadership Series, Innovation Fair, Self-Leadership curriculum, Yoga and Mindfulness, Appreciate Enquiry, Social Innovation and more, the students learn Ethics, Design Thinking, Problem Solving, Whole Systems Thinking, Compassion, and more, building Leaders with Character, Competence & Enthusiasm.
