Dispelling the Myths about Executive MBA in India

For individuals in a corporate set-up, a pg program are often the obvious step forward. It is indeed an impetus for those seeking professional growth and business leadership positions. Such individuals often prefer the one year full-time MBA program to the traditional two year post graduate programs offered by Indian institutes.

The one year program is indeed a more beneficial alternative for seasoned professionals. Its reality-based approach certainly allows for a more practical insight into the industry.

However, commonly known as the one year executive MBA in India, it is often mistaken for an executive MBA program. Although distinctive, both programs may share a few seemingly similar features. Needless to say, this is a cause for much confusion among applicants.

Misleading Course Titles

One of the main reasons why candidates may mistake the program for an executive MBA in India is the name itself. Most Indian institutes offering the course use the term ‘Executive’ in formal titles. Even though the description may clarify that it is a full-time, rigorous program, headers such as Post Graduate Program for Executives (PGPX) or Executive Graduate Program in Management (EPGP) inevitably fuel the confusion.

Work Experience Requirements

The executive MBA in India is a program designed for individuals familiar with a professional set-up. The programs across India, therefore, specify a mandate of at least 5 years of work experience. For this reason, candidates applying for the program often tend to be executives seeking higher qualifications and career positions. This may promote the misconception that the program is an executive MBA.

Owing to the aforementioned stipulation, this is the first Indian management program to align with the terms recommended by the Association of MBAs (AMBA).

The Course Duration

In contrast to the traditional two-year post-graduate programs in India, the one year MBA program obviously involves a shorter duration. This may lead many to believe the curriculum to be more relaxed. On the contrary, the one year program is extremely rigorous. The shorter time frame is a result of omitting certain theoretical concepts that the candidates are already acquainted with on account of their work experience.

The Actual Executive MBA

What then, is the actual executive MBA, you might ask. As the name suggests, it is a part-time program for working individuals. It allows them to pursue an MBA while working full-time and tends to be a less rigorous course. Candidates are often enrolled through an online or distance learning platform.

Although there may be a few nominal similarities, a one year MBA and the executive MBA course are quite distinct. Now that you know the difference, be sure to not repeat this rather common mistake.
