Growth Mindset Vs. Fixed Mindset – Learning The Difference At SOIL

“The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset. This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives.“

~ Carol S. Dweck, Mindset: The New Psychology Of Success

Psychologist Carol S. Dweck, Professor of Psychology at Stanford University, the mindset science essentially hypothesised that individuals have two types of mindsets – fixed and growth mindset. Those with a fixed mindset believe their ability is what they are born with. Intelligence and talent or both are fixed and that by itself would lead to their success or achievements in their endeavours. On the other hand, there are people who have a growth mindset who are of the belief that abilities can be enhanced through effort in learning. Thus, these individuals are able to face and counter challenges through learning new things.

Growth Mindset Vs. Fixed Mindset - Learning The Difference At SOIL

The concept of born intelligence or innate skill sets is a process of change is flawed at the outset. Potential is a quality that evolves with age and experience. When we are young, we are excited about learning something new. As we grow older, emotions like anxiety and depression start to cloud the learning process. Developing a Growth Mindset is essential for the student to enjoy learning again and improvement is a cyclical process that is inculcated through feedback.

Growth Mindset Vs. Fixed Mindset: Learning The Difference At SOIL

Coming from a conservative family in India, often times girls are not encouraged to pursue higher education or aspire for a professional career. My father inspired and encouraged me to challenge myself, set goals and ultimately become a disruptive technology solutions sales professional and a force for social equality.

After I graduated in Computer Science at the top of my class, I landed with my dream job at Infosys. A pure IT role, the profile of a Systems Engineer should have satisfied me. But my ambitions were to move up the chain. The SOIL MBA course happened in 2013, and how. The time spent at SOIL fired my growth mindset and freed me from the clutches of a fixed approach which I was getting into. The pedagogy of the SOIL MBA program weaves business learning with inspired leadership and provides a stepping stone to create an impact that matters. The teaching methodology followed at SOIL is unique in that it enables students to constantly question and challenge themselves. In the process, a leadership quotient is developed and students develop a social heart along with a business mind.

Established in 2008, those were the early years at SOIL. The curriculum of the SOIL one year MBA – PGPM was dynamic and kept evolving in sync with industry needs. This MBA has been structured with experiential learning, case studies, and more. As I look back, the experience stoked the growth mindset within me, something that has helped me not only professionally, but personally too. I would like to single out two areas which have helped me to continuously transition in my career.

    • Developing Emotional Quotient – SOIL’s PGPM – one year MBA stresses on developing empathy as a part of its learning curve. It helps students to take an understanding and sensitized approach to problem solving. Teamwork, field work in remote areas and with the villagers helped us to develop new perspectives to business rather than a unilateral decision making approach. Learning to appreciate the needs of others was a key step in developing a growth mindset.
    • Importance of Teamwork – Leadership in the business world faces continuous challenges and demands that are geopolitical and environmental that demand a macro perspective and solutions that can align strategically. Innovative teaching approaches including case discussion study and presentation helped us to play an interactive and inclusive role in clarification, active listening, direction, empathy, and strategic thinking. We learned the importance of humane leadership and realised the growing emphasis of ethical leadership. This helped me understand that teams have a mindset too and the fact that the process helped us to ditch the singular focus and cultivate a culture where the focus was on acquiring knowledge and expanding skill sets.
    My ‘Growth’ Journey

The program at SOIL changed my mindset and I took up a sales career anchored around next gen technology solutions and moved to Australia to work in Cloud technology sales. After working with a couple of global multinational organisations, I joined Accenture to be part of large-scale transformational cloud deals. My experience of selling hybrid cloud IaaS services enabled me to become productive quickly at Accenture and deliver cloud transformation engagements. I have continued my growth journey and am designated as a Sales Director, Cloud & Infrastructure at Accenture, Australia.

I continue to work on social initiatives, including volunteering as a mentor with the ABCN Accelerate program, which targets exceptional students facing significant economic and social challenges. I also co-lead Accenture’s newest Inclusion & Diversity pillar: Social Mobility. The idea is to help Accenture attract and retain the best people, regardless of their educational qualifications or social background by offering training and workplace experience to individuals.

My vision is to inculcate a growth mindset for everyone to reach their potential, no matter what their background or circumstances. In this, I have to thank SOIL for helping me breach the barrier and develop a growth oriented approach with a humane touch. Learning at SOIL has helped me to realise that all people deserve to be in a learning environment and be dedicated to the growth of their intellectual abilities. The challenge of creating these supportive contexts for all learners has been addressed by the MBA courses at SOIL and I hope the growth mindset will play a meaningful role in creating inspired managers for the Indian industry.
