Have you ever been curious to know why Design led Business is becoming a buzzword on the rise, or how businesses can benefit from Design Thinking?

At our first Advisory Board Meeting to discuss the curriculum of our new program on “Business Design”, the chair of our Advisory Board, Mr. Muthuraman suggested that as a part of our curriculum design process, we should meet the senior leaders of 4-5 large employers of business school talent, from industries which are transforming themselves for the future, and incorporate the inputs from these conversations to refine our program curriculum and ensure that it is as relevant to the future business environment as possible.

So, on board with this great idea, starting August 2018, we went out into the market and met with Mr. Krish Shankar, CHRO, Mr. Deepak Padaki, Global Head of Strategy, and Mr. Anantha Radhakrishnan, CEO of BPM business unit from Infosys, Mr. Saurabh Govil CHRO and Pratik Kumar, President from Wipro, Mr. Soumitra Bhattacharya, MD from Bosch and Dr. Devi Shetty Founder, Narayana Hrudayalaya to understand the current organizational trends and challenges that they are facing; how they are reading the future of work in their industries, and how a design driven culture could add value and a distinct competitive advantage to their organizations.

The overall essence of these conversations are as follows:

    • The pace of change in today’s business environment is increasing exponentially – both in size and in impact. Economies, jobs and personal lives are becoming more digital, more connected and increasingly more automated. Businesses across industries are being threatened by disrupting technologies. What passes for “business as usual” today will be obsolete and outdated tomorrow. There is a need for organizations to transform themselves from not only having an efficiency mindset but also, a culture that fosters innovation and divergent thinking.
    • Technology is drastically transforming the Healthcare Industry. Doctors are having to appreciate and deploy technology in a big way. Artificial Intelligence based software can do a better job of diagnosis when time is short. It is anticipated that in ten years, laws will make it mandatory to take a second opinion from a software for a more accurate diagnosis. Today, it is riskier to be admitted to a hospital compared to doing Sky Diving! For instance, a Data Visualization Software on your smart phone that shows health parameters can save lives through interventions even before the doctor arrives on the scene. As a result, doctors would need to learn these emerging technologies in an accelerated way. On the other hand, doctors seem to be resistant to the emerging technological landscape as it is seen to reduce dependence on them, and so, creative ways have to be found to make them own and leverage technology to create maximum impact. Equipping doctors with the skills required to build trust with patients in short periods of time is of paramount importance.
    • Amid this digital disruption, there is a shift in the way IT professionals are required to work. It is crucial that they not only solve problems assigned to them but also proactively uncover hidden issues. They also need to be able to handle the Yin of process focus and the Yang of working together with heterogeneous teams. Putting customers first is of prime importance in the current business scenario and empathizing with clients or putting yourself in their shoes before coming up with a solution would be a pertinent step in this direction. Technology is making middle management disappear and erstwhile Project Managers have to learn digital and other skills to stay relevant
    • All of this requires a certain mindset, which design thinking enables over a period of time. It is with this in mind that organizations are setting up strong learning architectures to re-skill their existing leaders in emerging areas such as Design Thinking, Analytics, and Artificial Intelligence. Organizations are also looking at attracting the right talent with creativity, empathy, an eagerness and capacity to learn new skills, the ability to collaborate effectively to create new and inspiring stories, and the agility to adapt to today’s fast changing environment. This is the reason why they are hiring those with ‘liberal arts’ education to add value to stakeholders.

It was heartening for us to see that SOIL’s new multi-disciplinary Post Graduate Management Program curriculum is completely aligned to the needs of industry. Our program integrates Design Thinking, Management and Liberal Arts to unleash the creative potential of students and create truly well-rounded, future ready leaders.

For those of you who want to know more about our unique curriculum and experience the power of our new program, we invite you to attend a virtual workshop or visit our website: www.soilindia.net
