Coming from a middle-class background, a B.Tech. in Computer Science was the doorway to a decent and secure future for me. As many of the teenagers from similar backgrounds would tell you, “It is the ultimate aspiration for engineering graduates” such as me to join a technology company like Infosys, TCS, Wipro etc. As the placement scene evolved at our college, we had these companies coming in early and picking up a lot of my batchmates. What particularly intrigued me and drove me towards Infosys was the publicity brochure which said “We need engineers with the guts to question our relevance”. Here was an employer who was ready to recognise the potential that young techies such as me had and give us an opportunity to change the world. I was thrilled, as I was one of the lucky ones to get an early placement offer from Infosys. My dream had come true. Like me, my family was also ecstatic. For them this was a gateway to a secure future and for me possibly an opportunity to live and work in the US.

I Left Infosys To Join One of the top MBA colleges in India

I loved coding and Infosys provided me with a platform to showcase my talent. The campus in Bangalore was good, the social life peppy and the atmosphere was eclectic. The learning curve was excellent and to top it all, I had a wonderful set of mentors and peers. Nothing could be better. But these were early days.

I soon realised that a basic computer science degree was not enough for me to propel my career ambitions. The career path of a new recruit at Infosys begins as a support team member, transitions into mundane coding and high-level coding if he is good. I soon realised that despite all my qualities and motivation, I would have to up-skill myself to move up the corporate ladder.

I had reached a tipping point in my career, where the desire to explore and learn about other areas was pervading. The wheels were turning at the expectation of something different in my career. After all, I did not see myself writing lengthy code for the rest of my life. I was a people’s person, enjoyed teamwork and had a different vision for my career. Figuring out my post-graduation goal was not as easy as I thought it would be. However, my mentors were there to guide me as I vacillated on the idea of moving ahead with my plan. Finally, I decided that an one year MBA would give me the opportunity to learn about global leadership, business concepts, leadership skills, build confidence and professional credibility.

My search for a relevant program led me to shortlist one of the best MBA courses in demand – Post Graduate Programme in Management – Business Leadership (PGPM – BL). The one year MBA program offered by SOIL Institute of Management. This program was conceptually unique and for working professionals like myself who wanted to take a short hiatus to quickly up-skill and join back early. Having gone through the admission formalities, I was delighted to be one of the shortlisted candidates. Convincing my family was another challenge, but I was able to overcome that when they saw my determination to look at the bigger picture. The financing hurdles were overcome through a mix of personal savings and bank finance – where the SOIL team helped me tremendously. I was ready to take my ambitions to the next level.

I started the first semester (of three) at SOIL understanding the basics and foundations of business. I got exposed to new functional concepts like marketing and finance. The incredible part of the term was the integration of learning outcomes to human centric personality development through a mix of exposure to liberal arts, experiential learning, case studies, and more. And I never can forget the experience of yoga sessions that integrated wellness and spirituality with the program. The first term was a whirlwind as I made new friends and met some incredible people from diverse industries. This fueled my desire to explore new vistas even more.

Why I left Infosys to join PGPM – BL

The second term had me narrowing my choices to what I wanted to do. Interaction with my classmates, SOIL alumni, faculty and industry leaders had given me insights about their career aspirations and what would be the right choice for me. Ultimately, I realised that to leverage my newly learned skills with my previous education and experience would be the best way forward. Armed with human centric leadership skills, I was ready to get back to the tech world. I was now ready to add to my transactional skills with value-based leadership skills that I had imbibed from the One year MBA PGPM BL.

As the PGPM came to its culmination, the placement season began at campus. A robust placement scenario led to a host of top-notch companies visiting the campus. I was fortunate to be connected with my colleagues and mentors at my previous employer. They put me across as a referral candidate for their thrust into new technology and digital. Today I can boast about the ”two sides of the same coin. ” – I left Infosys as a software developer and have returned as a manager in data science.

The time that I spent at SOIL was an opportunity for personal and professional growth. While it was hard work, I made friends with a diverse set of people. The relationships that I have made, go deep and as we go up the corporate ladder, diversity in our professional ecosystem will carry us to greater heights. Today, it’s safe to say that the one year PGPM – BL has provided a solid foundation in major business disciplines and core business skills. Their world-class faculty and industry leaders for the 1 year MBA programs have developed a unique and path breaking course based on up-to-date best practice and latest academic research, something that has transformed my career.
