Finding my North Star Through the Business Leadership Program at SOIL

“You’re always one decision away from a totally different life.”

Each one of us struggles to leave a mark on the world while trying to ace our day to day goals.

While it’s easy to lose oneself in the great competition that all of us are a part of, there’s something that can help us remain rooted even in difficult times.

Post the pandemic, the struggle to fend for oneself has become real but the times of distress have also taught us to hold onto our values even more firmly than ever before. It’s been a wake-up call for us as humans to stop getting carried away with the so-called notion of being successful instead to focus on our values and mend our ways for a better tomorrow.

When I was getting myself enrolled for the business leadership program at SOIL, little did I know my life was about to change. The alumni I had spoken to, before my admission, did tell me about one of its kind teaching and curriculum at SOIL but I had never imagined it could be such a transformational journey.

Watching various famous personalities stand tall yet strongly rooted, watching different leaders in different arenas work diligently towards a revolution, all these years, used to make me contemplate. What ignites the fire that burns within them, that keeps them moving towards their goal so passionately?

One Day or Day One, And the Choice I Made

In life, we come across people who are immensely accomplished in their fields and then we come across people who are not only victorious in their fields but have a wholesome approach to life, who know what they are doing and where they are headed. As much as being a successful entrepreneur had been my goal since childhood, as I grew older, I realized there are more things to life than just professional success. I learned the versatility of life and still wanted to be glorious but with a holistic approach.

Through the various programs at SOIL, my horizon broadened a little by little. From the daily rituals to programs that lasted for days or weeks, I rediscovered myself and learned what my calling truly is. Of course, the journey had its highs, lows, and a lot of self-reflection and it was all very much worth it in the end. I would like to mention a few of the programs that were distinctly conducive to my growth, self-leadership program being the most remarkable one.

Honing My Self-Leadership Skills Under the Lights of Anil Sir

It was both an honor and a pleasure to be a part of the self-leadership program taken by Mr. Anil Sachdev, the eminent founder of SOIL. The richness of the program thrives on a strong value system based on a strong focus on leadership transformation.

I underwent an experiential journey that started right from listing out my life goals and ways I can accomplish them. The sessions with sir pushed me towards exploring my truest physical, emotional as well as intellectual self to pursue my dreams and bring them to reality.

The discussions with Anil sir not only made me realize all my strengths but also helped me work on my weaknesses. Words by sir motivated me to follow the path to success boldly and righteously. He shared many of his experiences and stories which were not only a learning experience but also gave me some food for thought. By the end of the program, I had metamorphosed into a self-aware, self-reliant, and innately stronger self.

The teachings and suggestions by sir came in handy, especially, when the economy started going through the setback of the pandemic and the venture that I had started around the start of 2017 was at the verge of breaking apart. All my employees had lost all hopes and I was finding it hard to cope up with the issues. One fine day when I was sitting at my work desk at home after a call with my business-partner, where after discussing all the losses incurred he mentioned about something about SOIL’s webinars. In this webinar Anil sir had been in a conversation with TATA steel’s T.V. Narendran and they spoke about working through a crisis and surviving it like a champion. It reminded me of all those times sir taught us to stay strong in difficult situations and keep all those who work with us or under us united. Also, how he mentioned his own struggles and spoke about patience and strength being the key to surviving the hard times. Surprisingly, I was able to boost the morale of my employees and we survived as a start-up despite the losses. Surely, things are not back to normal yet and neither is our venture but we are slowly and steadily working hard to be back on track.

Morning Motivation with Positive Thoughts and Inspirational Stories

After the self-leadership program, the morning circle used to be my personal favorite. In a 15-minute session every morning, all students would gather along with some faculty members and read out positive thoughts or tell each other thought-provoking stories. We would even discuss our goals for the day.

One might think this sounds similar to a school assembly, well it can be called a short and improved version of it. It used to be such an enriching way to start the day and it would replenish me with positive energy. Drawing inspiration from the morning circle at SOIL, I continue to devote 15 minutes of my mornings to self-reflection, positive affirmations, and planning out my goals for the day.

I find the positive affirmations and thoughts to be so compelling that I have put up various quotes in my office. These not only make me feel pumped up but also help maintain a positive aura at the workplace. We have put a white board at the entrance of our office where I every morning write a happy or positive thought. So many of my clients as well as employees have mentioned it being a great way to start their day or work and it makes me even happier.

Attaining Peace of Mind while Practicing the Science of Physical and Mental Wellbeing

The pandemic has taught us not only to be self-reliant but also to be able to take care of ourselves. The ritual of yoga ensures wellness both inside and out. As much as all of us know the goodness of practicing yoga, we are unable to indulge in it due to hectic schedules.

SOIL’s initiative to include yoga and wellness as a part of the curriculum is commendable and goes on to prove their belief in holistic development and wellbeing. Many of my fitness freak friends absolutely appreciated the efforts of the institution for physical and mental wellness and I could not agree more. I felt more peaceful and active and felt ready to take on the world, one task at a time.

The asana and meditation I leaned at SOIL came in handy to create a morning routine for me and my family. All of us have made a habit to gather in the balcony every morning at 8 and practice yoga, trust me it’s a lot more fun and sanguine than it sounds.

    Finding the True Me

When I got to know about the process of learning ethics and other values through the medium of the theatre, I found it really fascinating and was looking forward to it. The experience of learning values in such an innovative way has its own beauty and a lasting impact. It got me thinking about the various aspects of our value system where we fall weak and how we could inculcate values in our day to day, personal as well as professional, lives. It also helped me be more confident in expressing myself and helped me overcome my inhibitions.

We Can’t Help Everyone, But Everyone Can Help Someone – Making Lives Better

Working with the NGO Khushboo as a part of the social innovation program was a delightful learning experience as I got to work towards the amelioration of the disabled. I was able to witness their daily activities, engage with them in some fun activities like dance sessions, and even made a few friends.

It made me realize how privileged I am to be abled and there are so many ways to make lives better for the lesser privileged. It awakened a sense of gratitude and kindness in me and made me realize my journey is at a much larger level than I used to think of it.

Summing Up My Journey at SOIL – A Magnificent Voyage to Discover Self

The journey at SOIL was a transformational one in so many ways. It changed me, my thought process, and my working style as well as capabilities. I knew I’ll get to learn a lot about business management and business leadership but the life lessons I learned along the way with the intellectual lessons took me by surprise. They broadened my view through which I used to look at life. From a shy and timid geek, the self-leadership sessions at SOIL revamped me into a confident, self-aware, and self-reliant human being. They managed to provide a direction to me at a time when I needed it the most and enabled me to take a flight into the real world well-equipped.

SOIL accorded an opportunity for me to work towards a better tomorrow and grow into the person I always aspired to be, and I am so thankful for it. By all means, enrolling at SOIL helped find me find my North Star taking me on a path to self-discovery and evolution of being a better version of myself.
