Artificial Intelligence – Frankenstein’s monster that will destroy the man who created them?

    Unemployment hits modern record high

In 1938, amidst the lingering pain of the Great Depression, the U.S. faced a high unemployment rate of about 20%. Concerns about job availability were widespread.

During this time, the renowned British economist John Maynard Keynes highlighted a new concern he termed “technological unemployment.” He warned that advancements in labor-saving technology were outpacing our ability to create new jobs. This trend was evident in various sectors, with new machinery revolutionizing factories and farms. For instance, the adoption of mechanical switching in the telephone network eliminated the need for local phone operators, a common job for young Americans at that time.

The question arose – Were these impressive technological strides, which were simplifying life for many, also causing job losses and disrupting the economy? Seeking to understand this dilemma, Karl T. Compton, president of MIT from 1930 to 1948 and a leading scientist of that era, addressed the issue in the December 1938 edition of this publication, discussing the “Bogey of Technological Unemployment.”

Recent advancements in generative AI, smart robotics, Blockchain, autonomous vehicles, and IoT have reignited concerns about the potential replacement of human workers by advanced technologies. This has led to fears of a future where AI could handle virtually all tasks, sparking discussions among leading techno-optimists.

Despite the stark differences in today’s technologies compared to the 1930s, Karl T. Compton’s article serves as a valuable reminder. It highlights that anxieties about the future of jobs are not new. Rather than resorting to fantastical ideas of genies and monsters, addressing these concerns is best done through an understanding of economics and the dynamic modern business landscape.

How to be irreplaceable in the Era of AI, Blockchain, and IoT?

Take a look at these non-negotiable skills you must develop to gain relevancy in the age of AI, Blockchain, and IoT, and for centuries to come –

    • Innovation – AI, Block, and IoT might be proficient at automating tasks and analyzing data, yet they often lack true creativity and the ability for conceptual leaps. That’s where humans excel in generating and adapting to new ideas, products, and processes, essential for staying ahead in rapidly evolving tech landscapes. Human’s must –
      • Deal with AI’s constraints – AI might not offer solutions to all challenges. Human creativity will be essential to tackle new problems and explore uncharted territories.
      • Collaborate with AI – The future likely holds productive partnerships between humans and AI. Innovations are crucial for developing efficient human-AI interfaces and workflows.
      • Ethical Perspectives – AI development poses ethical questions. Human innovation is vital to establish ethical standards and guidelines for the responsible use of AI.
    • Analytical Thinking – Humans can interpret data, identify trends, and make informed decisions, critical for leveraging the vast amounts of data generated by AI, Blockchain, and IoT.
    • Emotional Intelligence – Understanding and managing emotions enables effective communication, collaboration, and adaptability in diverse tech-driven environments.
    • Strategic Thinking – Humans can develop long-term plans and visions, crucial for guiding the integration and utilization of AI, Blockchain, and IoT in organizations.
    • Leadership – Human leadership skills are vital for inspiring teams, driving innovation, and navigating the complex ethical and social implications of AI, Blockchain, and IoT technologies.

By embracing lifelong learning and staying abreast of technological advancements, individuals can leverage these tools to enhance their productivity and problem-solving abilities, making themselves indispensable in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
