    • FAQs

We probably all know people, either at work or in our personal lives, who have the power of soft skills – they are great listeners, conduct themselves well, and no matter what the situation they are in, they always seem to know just what to say, and how to say it – without offending anyone. They’re caring and considerate, so even if they don’t have a solution to the problem, they usually leave the people feeling more hopeful and optimistic.

These people are masters at managing their emotions and staying calm and composed during a crisis. They can look at challenges rationally and find a sustainable solution.

What makes these people so different?

These people have a high degree of emotional intelligence. They have a heightened state of self-awareness and possess the ability to sense the emotional needs of others, as well.

    What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence, or EQ, refers to the capacity to comprehend and regulate one’s own emotions and those of others.

Performers that possess high emotional intelligence

The ability to manage emotions and influence others are key indicators of workplace success which is validated by research indicating that 90% of top performers possess high emotional intelligence. While technical skills are essential, developing emotional intelligence is crucial for aspiring or current leaders to foster teamwork and bring out the best in their teams.

What are the Emotional Intelligence skills that leaders need?

    Self-awareness

This entails understanding one’s strengths, weaknesses, emotions, beliefs, and motivations. Despite its simplicity, a survey by Korn Ferry found that 79% of executives had blind spots – skills they viewed as strengths but were perceived as weaknesses by others.

Leaders proficient in managing emotions can better grasp others’ feelings and motivate employees. Conversely, a lack of self-awareness can lead to decreased performance. Research in the Harvard Business Review suggests that teams with individuals lacking self-awareness make poorer decisions and struggle with conflict management.

    Self-Regulation

In my experience, I’ve never seen the tendency toward radical outbursts to surface as an indicator of strong leadership.
~ Daniel Goleman, the psychologist that popularized emotional intelligence, on his website.

Self-regulation involves controlling your emotions, behaviors, and impulses. Enhanced self-awareness facilitates this process; understanding your emotions allows for appropriate responses to situations.

    Empathy

Empathy, the ability to understand others’ experiences and emotions, is deemed the most crucial leadership skill by DDI. Leaders excelling in empathy demonstrate over 40% higher performance in coaching, planning, and decision-making, as per DDI’s findings.

    According to businessolver

Despite its significance, empathy is often undervalued, with 96% of employees rating it important yet 92% considering it underrated, according to Businessolver. However, prioritizing empathy yields increased revenue, retention, and productivity for companies.

Actively listening to employees and comprehending their needs boosts engagement, fosters trust, and enhances coaching effectiveness. Appreciating your team’s efforts enhances morale and cultivates a robust company culture.

    Social Skills

Social skills encompass your ability to perceive emotions and effectively interact and communicate with others. Emotionally intelligent leaders can enter a room of tense employees, sense the atmosphere, and address conflicts before they escalate.

Being attuned to your own emotions facilitates understanding others. Leaders adept at assessing others’ feelings can build and maintain relationships more easily. They recognise that success requires collaboration, communication, and a shared vision, rather than individual efforts.

    Motivation

Motivation involves inspiring both yourself and others to take action. Leading by example is crucial; self-motivated leaders prioritize organizational goals over monetary rewards. They set goals, take initiative, embrace challenges, and remain optimistic in difficult times.

A positive attitude boosts team confidence, and your intrinsic motivation sets the tone for the organization. Understanding how to empower employees becomes easier as your positivity permeates the workplace.

How to develop/ improve your Emotional Intelligence and other soft skills?

Enhancing your emotional intelligence skills not only fosters personal leadership growth but also enables you to motivate and coach teams more effectively.
So, how do you develop these soft skills?

Working executives look usually opt for MBA programs to upskill. However, PGDM programs nowadays are being preferred over the traditional MBA programs due to their industry-relevant curriculum.
Nonetheless, the program alone can not do justice. It is the choice B-school that makes all the difference.
