Learn the dynamics of Leadership with an MBA in Business Leadership

Are Leaders Born Or Are They Made…?

Although the debate continues on this, the empirical evidence points to the fact that a very small proportion of leadership skills are inbuilt and the majority have to be developed.  In business, success can be attributed to experience, development and practice. Inbred talent can only come out to the fore if nurtured in a manner so as to foster leadership development. The goal of conventional education is to impart knowledge to students leaving aside the applications of skills. The transition from a conventional management education to a job is a transition point where many are found wanting.

Management is now taught as a science and the MBA degree is seen as a sure path to career advancement and higher salaries. The moot question, however, is whether a qualification could  help the candidate to learn, grow, and develop as a leader? Could an MBA offer that?

Learn, grow, and develop as a leader

    What is Leadership ?

Leadership looks at an amalgam of processes and nurtured qualities in managers. These originate from learning and practice and includes values such as :

Consciousness – This trait is about the learning of being fully immersed in our actions, feelings or thoughts. Curiosity in learning and a state of happiness is achieved only when a manager is in harmony with his surroundings.

Equilibrium – This is achieved by a leader through the appreciation of the value of “Sustainability”. A concordant approach to management is one where there is  awareness of this dimension through teachings or experiences.  A “Whole systems Thinking” approach where elements and systems are related, and how they influence a system would be an example.

Compassion- The willingness and ability to appreciate others perspectives and reaching out to help them in case of need.

Diversity – An appreciation of the individuality of people and how to manage them collectively for the desired outcome.

Ethical thinking- The process of being fair to all stakeholders and using the correct approach to achieve results.

The Importance of Leadership in Business

Leadership and its development has now become a priority for businesses. In a dynamic business scenario, organizations encounter rapid transformation and come across several hurdles. In tackling these issues, one tends to get bogged down and lose sight of organizational goals and objectives. Business leaders look to overcome these obstacles through cognitive and behavioral skills and chart out paths for the followers and organizations. MBAs offer an important source for future leaders. With their knowledge about roles and functions in the business environment, learning in business leadership offers a considerable advantage in developing leaders.

Before we look at how an MBA in Business Leadership would help in the making of a future leader, it is important to look at the personality and some of the traits of a business leader.

    • Integrity and character– These are the most important traits of a leader. Leading by example brings following by teams and fosters trust and respect.
    • Inspiring– The true leader has the ability to set examples for others and fosters emulation by people through teamwork.
    • Responsibility– Taking responsibility for oneself and others through actions is the driving force in leadership and propels teams to achieve business objectives in a harmonious manner.
    • Pathos – Leadership is also about compassion. It is important for a leader to have a mature understanding of the people he works with and how they react under stress.

Relevance Of An MBA In Business Leadership

In management, the terms MANAGER and LEADER are construed to be the same, and are often used conversely. Though there are overlapping areas, the differences are important to understand. A Manager is transactional in his approach while a leader looks to build relationships and perform tasks through a human-centric approach.

Young / mid career managers often tend to struggle as they transition to leadership roles. They are faced with situations where they have to radically change their concepts of leadership. A PGPM in Business Leadership helps them to think differently and also to leverage their cross functional skills to succeed. This course helps them to evolve from being individual contributors to modern day business leaders.

The MBA in Business Leadership identifies the challenges of young managers and helps them to face them through a mix of exposure to liberal arts, experiential learning, case studies, and more.

While pursuing this course, a young manager gets a springboard to further their career through skills imbibed. It encourages them to develop a thought process that helps them to think differently and helps them to:

    • Recognise and nurture innate leadership abilities and to learn to apply them in professional settings.
    • A deeper understanding of various characteristics of effective leadership.
    • Learning about effective communication, teamwork and collaborative techniques.
    • Foster a mindset that enables critical thinking, ethics, transformative decision making and problem solving.
    • A refresher in core areas of business management.
    • To think innovatively and build a creative thought process necessary for continuous professional development and growth.

    Conclusion

Businesses need leaders to function and thrive in a volatile, connected and unpredictable world.  Leadership talent is difficult to find in the industry today and hence corporations look inwards at potential talent and try to groom them for future leadership roles. However, the paucity of good leaders mean that the demand supply equation is skewed towards the demand side and will remain so.

    • 84% of companies expect a leadership shortfall in the next five years
    • 77% of companies have some sort of leadership gap
    • 71% of companies do not think their current leaders are capable of driving them into the future
    • Only 19% of businesses claim to be “extremely effective” at developing leaders

An MBA in Business Leadership addresses this demand in an effort to provide goal-oriented and holistic business leadership learning to young professionals. Coupled with their work experience it will offer a launch-pad to those looking to build a career with top-notch corporates.

SOIL’s Post Graduate Program in Business Leadership is an effort to help students with the skills needed to be the leaders in Emerging India.

This program through an innovative pedagogy looks at presenting India’s future leaders who are high on integrity and character. These leaders of the future will inspire and influence the business community and lead  India on its way to becoming an economic superpower.
