To survive today’s competitive world where business dynamics are continually transforming, individuals need to be ever-ready to confront hurdles. Organizations are looking for an X-factor in a candidate that can help them grow exponentially while hiring for managerial / senior positions. An MBA in a respective field always has an upper hand over a candidate with just a graduate degree. With job-fitting interpretations changing, it has become quintessential to be equipped with practical knowledge over theoretical concepts. A one-year MBA program can help students hone skills, master concepts, experience reality, and emerge as a change-maker.

    Living the MBA life

However, doing a one-year MBA is easier said than done. With the same course curriculum as a typical two year program, life in a one year MBA can have its fair share of ups and downs.

Here are some of the key tips and advice which we experience while studying the course:

    1. Be Organised and Plan ahead- The same can be said for any degree, but the MBA even more so thanks to its challenging curriculum. Although you’ll be very busy, careful planning will help remove some of the stress you’ll inevitably face. The more disciplined you are and the more effort you put into it, the better your learning experience will be.
    2. Take the pre-reading seriously- Make sure you read all of the case studies set, as discussions in class are focused around these for most subjects. It’ll give you the best platform to learn with your cohort and classmates. Most of them are incredibly interesting and can set you up nicely to learn for assignments and exams.
    3. The Power of Networking- Make the most of your first few weeks on the course to get in contact with people in industries you may want to pursue a career in. You’ll learn from an early stage how the ‘hidden job market’ is a powerful way of obtaining a job post-MBA. Speaking with MBA alumni can also be beneficial in many ways, such as if you have specific questions about the course or want to find out more about general student life at the business school.
    4. Make the most of every opportunity- Don’t underestimate how fast the year will go. Make the most of it and get involved. Exploring your business school’s campus can also bring a wide range of opportunities when it comes to networking and exploring, “especially if you’re still unsure about your future career path”.

Also, there are various things which makes this one-year program different from undergraduate studies, such as:

    Inside and Outside the classroom:

Within the classroom, you will learn from top thinkers and leaders in the business world. Our classmates consist of professionals from diverse states and backgrounds, meaning we share a class with everyone from corporate marketing managers to health care specialists to computer engineers.

Outside the classroom, we work with others to enhance our professional brand and network. We dive into unfamiliar business cultures, and collaborate with people from all walks of life. We have an opportunity to take up live industry projects, and build lasting relationships from the rich experiences and mentors.

    Around the Campus:

Whether you want to further a particular skillset, connect with like-minded people or simply relax – SOIL is an inspiring place. With a broad range of recreational, social and cultural activities and clubs there’s plenty of opportunity to do what you love or try something new.

From Yoga to arts and culture, life on campus invigorates mind, body and spirit.

    What to Expect:

An MBA institure is fundamentally different than undergraduate study. What can you expect as you begin your journey of advanced study?

    Post-Graduate level coursework:

    • Your courses will usually consist of a smaller cohort.
    • Courses will be based on specific topics and will focus on reading and discussing the research and cases related to that topic.
    • You will be expected to participate in in-depth discussions.
    • Reading load will be intensive. Plan on spending 20-25 hours per week on reading.
    Conclusion:

You can expect your time doing an MBA to be an exciting and challenging endeavour. It will normally require at least 40-48 hours a week of sustained work in reading, writing, preparing presentations, developing projects, library research and more. Your professors will expect you to take charge of your own educational path and you can ask for guidance when you need it. You can also expect times of great inspiration and time of “feeling stuck”. Social and peer support is crucial for handling the inevitable ups and downs of post-graduate school.
