Creativity, Design Thinking, and Innovation in Business

Design Thinking is a human centric transformational process that helps organizations to develop focused products/ services/ processes for stakeholders. In a business setting, the starting point is a solution behind a human need, enabling a synergy between the product and the customer. As design looks to focus and create differentiation and build a connection with customers. Thus, as a subset of conventional strategic marketing, design thinking has gained importance in the business world. As organizations focus on gaining a competitive edge, there is a growing realization of the importance of design and design thinking in the business scenario.

Master The Skills You Need To Sustain Creative And Design Thinking Capabilities Through An MBA

With increased interest in a two-year PGDM MBA, and its relevance in business, various terminologies and concepts that form the design thinking concept need elaboration.

Creative thinking enables managers to apply their imagination to generating ideas, questions and hypotheses, experimenting with alternatives. Innovation, on the other hand, is the creation of new ideas and perspectives, methods, products, processes and their implementation.

The process of PGDM is a much wider concept, all-encompassing and is a conglomerate of Creativity, Psychology, business processes, and innovation.

    The Process of Design Thinking

Design thinking is an iterative process of deriving and understanding the needs of the USER of a product/ service. This product/ service could be internal or external to the organization. The process starts with an assumptive premise, leads on to evaluating the needs of the users and finally to build value propositions around them. Entrepreneurs and Managers look to build their organization through design thinking and leading to innovation. Integration of Design Thinking to Business Design is synergistic, transformative and leads to the creation of a long-term path and vision of the organization.

The process of Design thinking, therefore, is innovative, process driven and revolves around the user/ customer. This process when integrated into a business scenario, involves empathizing with the stake-holder, definition of issues through brainstorming, prototyping solutions, testing them, and their implementation. Business design draws on a mindset to maximize value for the organization in the long run through innovative and successfully implemented models.

    Skills Required in Design Thinking

Information Technology has been leading a change in the way we work and will continue to do so. However, the long-term success of any organization depends on design thinking and in turn would be dependent on the soft skills of its employees. A design thinking mindset would expose and nurture skills like problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, leadership, collaboration and communication. These are skills that would be essential and fundamental to a successful design thinking professional. The World Economic Forum also identified problem solving, critical thinking and creativity as the key skills that employees need to thrive and lead businesses in the future.

Mastering Creative and Design Thinking Skills – What the MBA Can Teach You

An MBA programme in Business Design is modelled at exposing the candidate to –

    • Business Functions – This helps students to learn about core management functions such as Marketing, Finance, Human Resources, Analytics, etc.
    • Liberal Arts – Design thinking is about understanding human behaviours better which comes through communication, through a study of subjects like Psychology, Philosophy, Anthropology etc.
    • Design Thinking – The process of Design Thinking is inculcated through introspection and awareness. Students are also taken through the process and learn about research, building empathy, observation and defining, ideation, prototyping, testing and implementation.
    • Experiential Learning Through Immersion – All of the above come together and students learn to integrate via real life project work which gives them first-hand, practical experience.

Simulation of a growth mindset helps the student to develop skills that are essential and those he may use in practice of Design Thinking. Some traits that the MBA courses look to develop in its students are –

    • Developing Empathy and Understanding People
    • The Art of Critical Questioning
    • Being Open-minded
    • Working in Teams – Being a Team Player
    • Divergent and Convergent Thinking
    • Failing is an Opportunity to Learn

Exploring beyond the realms of a traditional MBA with SOIL Institute of Management’s PGDM in Business Design would give one the opportunity to be part of a transformational program that would enable the students to work for “human-centered innovation”. This PGDM program derives its strength from an interdisciplinary curriculum that combines liberal arts, design thinking and management education.

The experiential immersion as an integral part of this unique MBA course enables students to get a deep understanding and a real-time exposure to people, business and environment. Exposure to liberal arts inculcates a better understanding of humans, communication skills, develops critical thinking and helps to reduce bias in decision making. The b school helps the student to realise and master his innate creative and design thinking capabilities by exposing them to essential soft skills that have a focus on innovation and sustainability. These managers are greatly in demand and thus, this PGDM MBA will equip the student with the demands of a fast changing and dynamic economy.

    To Conclude –

An PGDM in Business Design places focus in key areas like:

    • Core Business Learning
    • Liberal Arts
    • Design Thinking
    • Experiential learning through immersion

To become a “Catalyst of Innovation” would require one to realise, learn, hone and master fundamental creative skills that look to uncover innovative opportunities. Having a user-centric approach to problems and situations would ultimately foster a novel approach and solution building with a different perspective. These creative skills are the heart of Design Thinking, and can be learned and mastered through one of the best MBA courses in demand i.e. an MBA – PGDM in Business Design.
