Difference between a PGDM and an Executive MBA?

    • admin
    Share

Candidates aspiring to pursue an MBA or management studies in India have many different options to choose from. The numerous programs offered by various institutes and universities often leave many candidates confused. While the difference is mostly in terminology, quite often the syllabus and course structure may also differ.

Two of the popular MBA programs in India include the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) and the one year Executive MBA program. To make an informed choice, you must understand the differences between these two courses.

    What is PGDM?

Post Graduate Diploma in Management, popularly known as PGDM is a two-year program designed to impart practical knowledge and managerial skills to students so that they can hold senior managerial/leadership positions in an organization after the completion of this course. The course imparts executive, managerial, and leadership skills in students while providing practical experiences.

The students are required to complete all courses provided by the institute and students have the liberty to choose a specialization in the second year. PGDM is the preferred choice for candidates who are eager to learn business skills & knowledge and explore new opportunities.

    What is an Executive MBA?

Executive MBA, also known as Executive Master of Business Administration, is a business degree that attracts a diverse group of working professionals from industries such as large private organizations, public sector undertakings, NGOs, SMEs, mid-size companies, and family businesses.

EMBA is designed for seasoned professionals who wish to enhance their business skills and prepare themselves to take on leadership/entrepreneurial roles. The candidates choosing an executive MBA require work experience. Most institutions offering executive MBA programs only admit individuals to the course if they have strong work experience.

    Duration of the Program

PGDM is a two-year program. It is a rigorous, full-time program that is taught at some of the topmost autonomous management institutes in the country. Students gain practical knowledge about their chosen specialization while pursuing PGDM.

On the other hand, the Executive MBA in India is also a full-time program, but the training in this course is imparted during one academic year, i.e. a one year MBA.

EMBA is recommended for individuals who have good working experience and have enough business background. The course is apt for working professionals, entrepreneurs, etc

    Enrolment Criteria

The selection process for PGDM courses is based on the aspirant’s scores in the competitive entrance examinations that are conducted across the country. For an EMBA program, in addition to the work experience, the candidate’s soft skills are also considered through interviews and personal statements.

Another major difference is that graduates without any work experience are generally accepted for the PGDM. However, the Executive MBA specifies a mandate of at least two years of work experience for candidates in most institutes. Indian School of Business (ISB) admits students with at least five years of working experience.

    Who is it for?

The PGDM program is recommended for graduates or individuals with work experience of lesser than five years. These candidates go on to occupy entry-level, managerial roles after graduating from B-Schools.

The one-year Executive MBA program is designed for experienced professionals who wish to enhance their business skills and take on leadership roles.

    Course Structure and Content

In the PGDM course, candidates are introduced to fundamental business concepts in the first year, whereas they choose their specialization in the second year, with an added live internship.

As candidates in an Executive MBA degree are seasoned professionals, the course focuses more on practical aspects and interactive learning.

    The Bottom Line

PGDM and EMBA are courses designed for candidates looking to gain practical knowledge about their core fields. PGDM is a two-year program that can be pursued both by graduates and working professionals looking to gain specialization in a specific domain.

EMBA is specifically for working professionals with good experience. It imparts knowledge to leaders, executives, and managers, helping them achieve their future business goals.

Now that you are aware of the differences between PGDM courses and the One Year Executive MBA in India, you can choose the program best suited to your needs.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
