    • Conclusion

The conventional MBA has been developing skills in students to manage business situations and environments and has been successful at that. However, recent tumultuous events like the COVID pandemic, the Ukraine war, and geopolitical tensions between superpowers have led to hitherto unknown business situations. Supply chain blockages, zooming interest rates, the threat of a looming recession, etc. are redefining the way economies and businesses are run. The era of jams to the movement of people, ideas, and trade is here, and hopefully temporary. The hint of de-globalization and national rhetoric is causing significant disruption and is drawing new patterns. This era of shrinking globalization has reached an inflection point and needs skills like critical and strategic thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to adapt to dynamic and challenging environments.

In this changing business environment, the chasm between relevance and obsolescence can widen very fast. If organizations are to stay relevant, they must adapt to change but this needs to be prompted before change demands the need to adapt. There is a demand for new-age managers to continually adapt and help their organizations remain relevant. This could be internal with employees and external with customers and investors. The key change, however, lies in keeping abreast globally with emerging trends and markets and foreseeing the extraneous circumstances that may have implications and may demand innovation.

The face of MBA education has to keep in sync with these realities. Learning has to be more flexible than ever. B-Schools have to gear up and diversify their pedagogy to create value for MBAs and employers by producing globally aware and multi-skilled working professionals. The MBA offered by b-schools needs to embrace this challenge and help their students to stay ahead of the curve and anticipate what is to come. This requires them to differentiate their programs, adapt continuously, and remain agile.

Some of the steps in this direction taken by top business schools have been to introduce defining changes in the delivery of the MBA program. A few of these have been in the area of

    • Setting up exchange programs with like-minded b-schools.
    • Having a renowned faculty that kept itself abreast of the changes through research and advisory roles to industry
    • Study trips in other markets to create awareness amongst students as to the functioning of new markets and develop global perspectives.
    • Dual Degree where b-schools shared their degrees and allowed students to develop a multicultural and multi-national perspective

These factors led to the evolution of the MBA now transcending the traditional skillset of the traditional. This was, in a way, a start to the era of learning “soft” skills” like intercultural relations, foreign languages, and effective communication. However, the demands of business meant that MBA programs needed to develop the student’s entrepreneurial and leadership qualities, ethics, corporate social responsibility, and knowledge of sustainable development. Organizations need managers who have conceptual skills, can innovate, problem-solve, and handle diversity in the workplace. The successful manager of tomorrow will drive success in the businesses of today and will ultimately head the successful businesses of the future.

This requires MBA programs to shift their focus to a more holistic academic approach. The need of the hour is an internationalized, thoughtful, and comprehensive curriculum that will produce conscientious managers.

The face of MBA education has to keep in sync with these realities. Learning has to be more flexible than ever. B-Schools have to gear up and diversify their pedagogy to create value for MBAs and employers by producing globally aware and multi-skilled working professionals.
