  • Effective Leadership Skills in HR

The concept of leadership in MBA courses has been evolving lately as organizations look at people to inspire a vision and influence others to work towards it. Leadership skills in one year MBA courses are essential as effective managers can mean the success of teams and thus organizational success.

    Effective Leadership Skills in HR

It is often misunderstood that a HR role is more administrative and conceptual skills may be adequate for a successful professional. However, in business organizations, HR roles are often extended and key to long term survival and growth. This requires a blend of conceptual and leadership skills. To understand this amalgamation, it may be important to articulate the differences between a Manager and leader of which there are many. We look at a few points that define the divergence between the two –

    1. Transformation Role Vs A Transactional Role – A Manager looks at quantifying and measuring value in his performance. In the endeavor to achieve results, they tend to concentrate on revenue, volume and profit. While this is an important aspect of organizational success, the long-term picture of creating value is ignored. Leaders on the other hand create value over and above their team achievements through enabling and motivation. The leader looks at long term value rather than mere targets or short-term goals.
    2. Managing Through Functional Fear Vs Leading Through Example– Managing people in organizations through functional fear does have a role in organizational functioning. However, employees tend to digress from the core values of product quality, customer experience and customer care. Managing through functional fear reduces communication and creativity, the two most important features in organizational success. Managing through leadership leads to self-discovery in employees and enables them to realise their potential, work for their teams and customers. Leaders set examples of good governance and decision making; and leave the teams with the freedom to evolve. The key is mentoring rather than prescribing.
    3. Leading for the Future vs Managing the Present – Managers are concerned with implementation of process-based procedures to achieve goals while leaders are visionary and think ahead to create and capitalize opportunities. Leaders have a clear transformative vision and are forward looking. This helps businesses to evolve in dynamic scenarios and solve problems in a constantly changing world.

Need For Leadership Skills in MBA In Human Resource Management

The HR leader is the essential cog in the organizational wheel and a key link between the management and the employees. An effective HR professional is responsible for recruitment policy, compensation and benefit plans, training, development, staffing processes and recruitment implementation. They also act as problem solvers and often diffuse complex situations.

The underlying objective of the HR professional is to help the organization achieve its goals by attracting the best quality manpower and to motivate them to perform at their potential. This requires the HR practitioner to focus on developing leaders. Thus, the HR function itself assumes a leadership role as it transcends beyond a mere administrative role to one that can help the organization create value through its employees. The HR professional, in this new avatar, should be equipped to assist managers and leaders to develop talents, systems, and processes required for achieving their own objectives also as organizational goals. Therefore, understanding the culture of leadership and being part of it becomes essential for HR professionals. Fostering leadership values requires a deeper understanding of the subtle differences between merely managing and being a leader.

Some Leadership Skills for a Career In Human Resources

    1. Decision Making skills – The HR manager’s decision making can have an impact on the employees of the organization and they should be able to strike a balance between their strengths and weaknesses.
    2. Interpersonal And Communication Skills – Having a positive relationship is essential when working with various echelons of management. Positive relationships are key to harmonious functioning with workers at all levels. Communication skills become essential in developing a structure that is mutually beneficial to the organization’s long term goal setting.
    3. Organizational And Leadership Skills – Working under pressure requires a skillset where the HR manager should be able to manage several tasks effectively. Besides, handling their own subordinates requires them to be honed in leadership qualities.
    4. Empathy – Perhaps the most underrated skill in today’s competitive world, especially when the HR professional is leading the expectations of so many others. The cornerstone of HR leadership, this is extremely vital to organizational success and can go beyond personal empathy as well.
    Conclusion

Management and Leadership are two competencies that require different skill sets. Not to undermine the former, the ideal professional is one who can bring both these competencies to the table. To keep pace and relevance in the fast changing and dynamic business world, b schools are recognizing the need to develop people with a composite skillset. An MBA in human resource management now encompasses the skill of directing, controlling, handling, deciding, overseeing etc. along with influencing, developing, coaching, guiding, mentoring or supervising people.

Leadership in MBA in HR is about risk-taking and cooperation.
