  • 4 Things That Are Unique About The Two Year Full Time MBA At SOIL

Management education in India is at a crossroads. Business schools are often driven by accrediting bodies that have a stringent criterion that drives their curriculum and teaching methodology. Thus, their ability to make curriculum alterations and adjustments (pursuant to the rapid changes) is constrained. Over a period of time, there has been a shift towards intellectual conformity as B schools look to achieve higher rankings seemingly driven by factors that overlook creativity and adaptability. Conventional MBA education follows a path of isomorphic mimicry. There is a failure to realise that mimicking models that have worked elsewhere may not have the intended results back home. Isomorphism is a process that forces the universe of Bschools to mimic others given the same operating environment. Over a period of time, MBA institutes are pressured to conformity and start looking the same. The invisible hand of accreditation and normative pressures stifle creativity and leaves a vacuum.

4 Things That Are Unique About The Two Year Full Time MBA At SOIL

In recent times there has been a radical shift towards responsible management practices in organizations. There is a call for conventional MBA education to couple with responsible management education

    The SOIL WAY

SOIL Institute of Management (SOIL) was established in 2008 in an effort to move away from the norm with the aim of building business leaders with character, competence and enthusiasm. The belief that businesses as part of their routine operations can look at positive social change, achieve ecological balance and look at holistic development drives their vision. The SOIL teaching methodology, thus, looks to inculcate values that integrate management education with a view to have a positive contribution to the triple bottom line of social wellbeing, ecological sustainability, and shareholder value.

The curriculum design at SOIL follows a dynamic, relevant and skill based structure. The curriculum is revised on a periodic basis to provide opportunities to students where they can create an impact. Functional learning is integrated with soft skills that help build character, competence, enthusiasm and develops inspired leaders that create and contribute to sustainable organizations of consequence.

The unique Full Time MBA From SOIL Institute Of Management

The SOIL 2 year Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management – PGDM integrates business, design thinking and liberal arts and aims at creating business leaders who excel in problem solving and creativity. The uniqueness of the two-year SOIL MBA is defined by a process driven approach that looks to provide learning that is a step beyond conventional education.

    1. Integrating Design Thinking

Design thinking is an iterative process that helps the practitioner to better understand the relevant stakeholders. The concept looks at a different perspective to redefine problems and works towards identifying alternate strategies and solutions that may not be apparent with the conventional way of thinking. The curriculum of the two-year MBA at SOIL is built on the premise that decision making is a process that needs to be looked at keeping in mind the various stakeholders, whether internal or external. This process driven approach is unique to the SOIL two-year MBA and differentiates it from the conventional MBA that is focussed on congruence. It is now a given that business situations are incongruent and unexpected events upset the apple cart. Disruption is now the buzzword and decision making needs to look at the user in a holistic manner. An MBA that looks to build leaders equipped with the Design thinking approach imparts the student with the tools to tackle emergent issues that affect the universe and help in long term business sustainability.

    2. Social Innovation – Deriving Value

The current thinking of the younger generation pursuing MBA courses is undergoing a radical shift from creating mere economic impact to that of social impact. A human centric approach to business is the order of the day and new age managers need to be inculcated in thinking that breeds innovation keeping in mind the social consequences of their decisions. The SOIL two-year MBA builds a thought process that a responsible economy, impartial society and sustainable future is the way for long term business stability and growth. The Social Innovation Program at SOIL is unique in its teaching methodology and requires students to work with an NGO once a week for a considerable duration of their post-graduate Program. The NGOs collaborate with the students on meaningful projects where they jointly develop novel ‘solutions’ to deep-rooted social, cultural, economic and environmental problems. This helps the “future leaders” to integrate development and social inclusion as part of their management education. With this intent, SOIL has incorporated the Social Innovation Program into its curriculum as an integral course.

    3. Experiential Learning

Most MBA courses tend to follow a route that takes the student through cognitive learning. As a result, students may lose out on learning through personal experiences that help them to process knowledge, skills, and/or attitudes in a learning situation characterized by a high level of active involvement. Experiential learning draws on the experiences of mentors, industry leaders, coaches etc. The two-year SOIL MBA has realised the potential that this track has and the benefits that could accrue to the student. Hence, experiential learning is an integral part of the SOIL MBA program and exposes the student to learning through experiential tracks. The two year MBA – PGDM at SOIL follows two experiential learning tracks that focus on the student’s career growth and leadership potential –

      • Industry Experiential – where students interact with Industry through activities, project work and internships to provide them with exposure and a platform to develop networks.
      • Leadership Experiential – This is a unique track that offers the student opportunities to develop their leadership potential through community work and in the bargain develop their emotional quotient.

As part of this unique intervention, students undergo myriad experiences such as the Dharamshala Trip, Theatre Classes, Yoga sessions, Mentorship Sessions, Leadership Series, Live Projects etc.

    4. Focus On Liberal Arts

Employers consider communication, problem-solving, and the ability to work in a team as the three key skills in their potential hiring. A strong foundation in liberal arts is now accepted in the corporate world as the industry as a precursor to building these skills. The shift from an MBA heavy in quantitative skills to one that looks at building soft skills is real. Integration of liberal arts in MBA courses offers a wider intellectual grounding in humanistic inquiry. It helps the practitioner to explore issues, ideas and methods with a view of inculcating critical thinking, fostering communication skills and broadening the thought process. The two year MBA at SOIL introduces the students to a diverse set of subjects such as psychology, anthropology, philosophy and ethics. The uniqueness of this pedagogy leads to honing communication skills, analysis of data, adapting to technology and professional trends, teamwork in problem solving and lastly confidence.

    Conclusion

The flagship two year PGDM is unique and helps students to unleash his inner potential. It imparts learning that is practical, multidimensional and user oriented. The two year MBA at SOIL can help you to gain knowledge that goes beyond the generalist MBA and can have a new approach in redefining internal processes and creating/ solving external problem statements. The world-class curriculum at SOIL empowers and inspires young leaders to take on the challenges of managing, collaborating and adapting with a different perspective. SOIL integrates Design Thinking, Management and Liberal Arts to unleash the creative potential of students and create truly well-rounded, future-ready leaders.
